Route around the mines in Ojos Negros
If you have been fortunate enough to end up at Ojos Negros, a well worth visiting village located to the south of Comarca del Jiloca, we suggest you a circular route that, starting from the main square, it will guide you through emblematic sites such as the windmill, the salt pans or the Santo Cristo de Herrera´s chapel, and most especially getting into the mine, where the visitor will get delighted at its magnificent landscape, also, visit La Marajosa viewpoint to enjoy with a bir´s-eye-view of the Jiloca valley, and if the weather is nice even the Moncayo peak.
You can go through the provincial boundaries to penetrate into the autonomous community of Castilla La Mancha, where the most recent excavation activities took place. This area has great labyrinthine craters full of colour, most of them have become artificial lakes.
Ultimately, and after visiting the mining district of Sierra Menera, you can go back to Ojos Negros taking the cemetery path to arrive at the fountain in the main square, and the Santa Engracia´s chapel. Do not forget to visit the castle and La Torre del Homenaje best known as “the prison”.
This route is about 27 kilometres long, and if you like mountain biking it can be ideal to enjoy the landscapes along the trip. You can also go through it by car, watching out at some points of the itinerary.
